Growing up, the popular tone of evangelism was to tell people that sinners were in the hands of an angry God. The message was about threatening people with hell fire if they did not “give their lives” to a stern God, and thereafter measure up to His high standard of holiness.
Even the motivation for evangelism was to log in additional hours of work in a heavenly book so as to accumulate rewards in heaven: the number of our crowns will be more and the size of our mansions will be more massive and gorgeously adorned than our neighbor’s.
Then the message swung to another extreme: come to Jesus, in 3 months, all your problems would be gone and your neighbors would not recognize you again. Then people got “saved” based on false hopes and were thus, set up for a life disappointment, confusion, and endless struggle. When that happened, we turned around and told them that it was their fault. Their faith was little and not absolute. Or they were not doing enough for God in order to qualified for, or activate, the promised physical and material blessings.
Today, I want to ask, “By which gospel were you saved? What did you hear? And what are you preaching to others?”
We have presented the picture of a God that some do not want to have anything with, while those who hopped in have found themselves trapped in the bondage of religion and thus are not enthusiastic to bring in more people into their misery. This is what religion creates.
But here is the truth; the problem with humanity was one and it was common to all men – sin. However, the good news is that God is not angry with us instead He made a provision for our salvation. Jesus paid the price for the sin of the whole world by becoming the ransom himself. He died for our sin, was buried, and raised for our justification.
There is nothing left for you to do. There is no price for you to pay to receive salvation, or to remain saved and favored of God, thereafter. Christ did it all – complete, full, and free. This is the gospel of grace. Any message contrary to this is “another gospel.”
The gospel of grace is the message that have been committed to believers whom God had made competent dispensers of the new covenant – inviting others into the kingdom of our loving Father.
The gospel is an invitation to receive and experience the unconditional love of the Father. This was the mandate that was given to us by Christ. This was the example that was left for us by the Apostles. This is the message we preach. This is grace evangelism. That is why we are animated to herald this message. The love of God compels us to, having known what it is to be in Christ.
For the believer, would you consider reviewing the gospel you believe and preach?
And to the yet to believe, why don’t you received this boundless love of God which contains redemption, forgiveness, justification by faith, and the new birth? God loves love and cares about you. Receive the free gift of God today in Christ Jesus, and be saved. Amen.
