In the mist of teaching His disciples about prayer, Jesus told a parable about a man that had a visitor in the night and needed something from his friend to be able to entertain his visitor. You would notice that the benefactor was inside with his children and the friend that was asking for a favor was outside knocking on the door from the outside. Which character are you in that story – the benefactor, his children that were inside with him and had ready access to all his provision, his friend, or his friend’s visitor?
The lesson here is if men would overcome their reluctance and inconveniences to respond to a friend, and if evil fathers would give to their children, how much more God, our heavenly Father, who is generous and eager to give to His own. This Jesus said concerning the Holy Spirit whom the Father would send. It is not about our ability to cajole God or weary Him and make him succumb to our persistent and shameless audacity against His willingness. It is about relationship.
Remember that this story was in the context of prayers before the Cross and before the event of the Day of Pentecost.
